Apprenticeships go a step further than just finding somebody a job, they help an individual develop a career and achieve their potential without the need for going to university.
What was your work background before joining Ingeus?
I started working in Skills in 1987 in an administration role. Over the next 30 years I have progressed my career through most of the key roles in a skills business, including Assessor, Trainer, Internal Verifier, Performance Manager and National Account Manager. I have been in Director roles for the past 10 years, working for some of the industry’s largest skills companies.
Why are you so passionate about apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships go a step further than just finding somebody a job, they help an individual develop a career and achieve their potential without the need for going to university. It’s a great way for employers to invest in their staff.
What opportunities do you believe the Apprenticeship Levy will bring?
The levy will help significantly as it brings large employers into Apprenticeships who have not taken them seriously in the past. Offering good quality well paid jobs with access to degree apprenticeships will make a big difference.
Are there any apprenticeship initiatives that you’ve seen in other countries that you would like to bring to the UK?
It is a commonly held view that Germany has one of the best Apprenticeship programmes. They are not viewed as second class to an educational equivalent and employers and Apprentices value them highly as a way of training whilst working.
What skill have you developed in recent years that you’re particularly proud of?
The ability to adapt and stay positive. Things change constantly, whether its technology, contracts, legislation, it’s important to accept and embrace the change. It’s easy to get distracted rather than getting on with the job and helping to change people lives for the better.
What legacy would you like to leave at Ingeus?
Placing Ingeus at the forefront of the skills industry with a fantastic team delivering it.
